Guided writing is the name given to the range of ways in which pupils are supported as they write individually within the supportive context of the classroom. The teacher scaffolds the writing process by providing a plan; being available for discussion or help; and providing appropriate resources and reference materials if necessary.

The conventions which are associated with particular kinds of conversations and talk events. For example, a debate and a discussion are similar but have different conventions and it is helpful for the teacher with the pupils to explore and identify these conventions as ground rules before pupils practise the activity.

This can operate for speaking and listening, reading or writing or a combination of all three. It can be, for instance, when a group of pupils discuss the opening scenes of a film together in class, without the direct involvement of the teacher.

This is where a group of 4-6 pupils receive teaching focused on a specific learning need. The session is usually about 20 minutes long and takes place either within the context of a class lesson or, possibly, outside of class lessons. Guided group sessions may be taken by a teacher or by a teaching assistant who is following a planned programme.
