The National Strategies promote teaching and learning approaches to overcome or minimise learning difficulties and disabilities, including specific barriers (e.g. sensory impairments), within a framework of a ‘pedagogy for all’. We recognise that teachers need ongoing support in order to respond effectively to the wider range of needs in the classroom as well as access to specialist advice and expertise where necessary.

Lesson planning is a method teachers use to specify the teaching activities for an individual lesson. Most lesson plans will contain an Introductory session, a main activity, and a plenary session (which summarises what children have learned in the lesson and may introduce what the children will learn in the next lesson).

This programme is designed to help practitioners and teachers teach children how the alphabet works for reading and spelling by: fostering children’s speaking and listening skills as valuable in their own right and as preparatory to learning phonic knowledge and skills; teaching high quality phonic work at the point they judge children should begin the programme. For most children, this will be by the age of five with the intention of equipping them with the phonic knowledge and skills they need to become fluent readers by the age of seven.

Learning Challenge is designed to be focused support for individual pupils and is based on one to one coaching of pupils by volunteer coaches, mentors or teaching assistants. It is a sequence of general sessions to help pupils to organise themselves for learning in Key Stage 3 and beyond, and to accelerate their progress from level 3 to 4. Topics include: organising yourself; working on your own; working with others; homework; and working in different subjects.

Learning conversations are periodic, small group discussions involving an adult coach and between two to four individuals to develop an ongoing dialogue with learners about their progress and preferences in learning.

A learning objective identifies the skill development or knowledge acquisition anticipated as the result of effectively-designed learning.

The Literacy Progress Units support the teaching of pupils working at level 3 in English, with the aim of moving them to level 4 in Year 7. The units teach pupils how to read with greater understanding and how to express themselves accurately in writing. There are six units: Spelling, Phonics, Writing organisation, Information retrieval, Reading between the lines and Sentences.

Long, medium and short-term planning Search for term Long, medium and short-term planning

Long-term planning gives an overview of curriculum coverage across a year or key stage. Medium-term planning usually covers a unit or sequence of lessons to support consistency across a department. Short-term planning specifies objectives and activities for particular lessons and should reflect the needs of the pupils involved.
