Maximising pupil progress (MPP) – formerly Progressing to level 6 and beyond in science with added 'How Science Works'

These resources are designed to:

  • Support good progression in science.
  • Move pupils from Key Stage 2 L5 to L6+ and Key Stage 3 L6 to A*B.
  • Extend approaches to support classroom pedagogy and professional development.

Six areas – aspects of How science works, effective group talk, scientific writing, research skills, using models and understanding misconceptions – were identified as preventing good progress 11–16. The resource is based on a Steps and Layers approach where a simple 'steps' table is used to identify 'where the pupils are', a second table identifies some strategies to help move pupils to the next step and detailed teacher guidance forms the final layer.
